Technics SL-1210MKX Adds Five Pounds of Cast Chassis Mass and ±4% Fine Pitch Above the MK7
Ever since Technics engineer Shuichi Obata invented the direct-drive turntable in 1970—leading to the original SL-1200 in 1972 and the quartz-locked SL-1200MK2/SL-1210MK2 in 1979—the 1200 chassis has lived a double life between club booths and living-room hi-fi racks. When Technics launched the coreless-motor SL-1200MK7 ($1,299) in 2019, the biggest critique from longtime MK2 owners was weight: at 21.2 pounds (9.6 kg), the MK7 shed more than five pounds compared to vintage decks. Unveiled on October 21 in Panasonic North America’s official announcement, the new Technics SL-1210MKX ($1,899.99 / £1,299 / €1,499) puts all that mass right back into the plinth.

26.2-Pound Cast-Weighted Plinth and Hybrid-Rubber Insulators
Slotting directly above the SL-1210MK7, the SL-1210MKX pairs its glass-fiber-reinforced bulk molding compound (BMC) cabinet with a heavy internal cast weight that drops the center of gravity and pushes total mass up by 5.1 pounds (2.3 kg) to 26.2 pounds (11.9 kg)—matching the heft of classic SL-1200MK2/MK5 decks. Underneath, newly engineered flat hybrid-rubber isolation feet damp low-frequency structure-borne feedback without introducing bouncy spring compliance when cueing a record. The 3.97-pound (1.8 kg) die-cast aluminum platter retains rear strengthening ribs and deadening rubber over a cog-free brushless DC coreless direct-drive motor rated at 0.025% WRMS wow and flutter and 0.7-second start-up to 33⅓ RPM.

Polished Silver S-Arm, Enlarged Ground Post, and ±4% / ±50% Pitch
Visually, the SL-1210MKX nods to the 1979 SL-1210MK2 by contrasting its matte-black plinth with a polished silver 230 mm static-balance S-shaped tonearm, upgraded with a reinforced headshell collar and screw support to prevent play over years of cartridge swaps. In the recessed rear bay alongside the gold-plated stereo phono RCA jacks, Technics fitted a larger, knurled ground terminal that is far easier to tighten by hand than the small post on the MK7.
On the top deck, the digital pitch control adds two new extremes alongside the traditional ±8% and ±16% ranges: an ultra-fine ±4% mode for surgical tempo matching, and a ±50% mode, accompanied by a quieter push-type reset switch with a momentary half-press function. Under the platter, DIP switches configure 4-step starting torque, 4-step brake speed, 78 RPM and reverse playback, and red or blue strobe LEDs alongside a glare-shielded white stylus target light.
