Rega Replay Brings Skeletal Plinth Engineering Down to $395

Entry-level turntables usually cut costs by cutting corners on the parts that actually touch the record: stamped metal bearings, wobbly plastic arms, and motors that hum whenever a quiet passage arrives. Rega took the opposite route with the new Replay, trimming away most of the plinth instead.

Priced at $395 in the U.S. (£259 in the UK) through U.S. distributor The Sound Organisation, the Replay sits $200 below the Planar 1 ($595) while keeping the Planar 1’s core mechanical hardware intact. U.S. preorders are open now, with the first shipment scheduled for early December 2026.

Why Half the Plinth Is Missing

Since Roy Gandy founded Rega in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, in 1973, the company’s design philosophy has treated mass as the enemy. Heavy rectangular plinths absorb energy from the motor and main bearing, then feed that stored vibration back into the vinyl LP and stylus. Rega’s costlier Planar 8, Planar 10, and flagship Naia pare the chassis down to a rigid skeletal frame connecting only the central bearing and the tonearm mount.

Developed over three years, the Replay applies that skeletal layout to a laminated matte-black MDF-core plinth weighing 4.85 pounds (2.2 kg) complete. A patent-pending, factory-sealed brass main bearing sits at the center, supporting a 23 mm phenolic resin platter designed to concentrate mass at the outer rim for flywheel speed stability. Because a traditional hinged acrylic box has nothing to bolt onto at the rear corners, Rega includes a custom low-profile removable dustcover with an anti-rotational tab that drops directly over the platter and arm when the deck is parked.

Planar 1 Hardware and a 60-Second Setup

The Replay uses the same hand-assembled RB110 tonearm fitted to the Planar 1, built around Rega’s ultra-low-friction bearings and factory-preset bias (anti-skate). According to the Rega Replay user manual, setting tracking force requires no scale or dial twisting: the 111-gram balance weight pushes onto the rear stub until it hits a mechanical stop, automatically setting the proper downforce for the factory-aligned Rega Carbon moving-magnet cartridge.

Drive comes from a 24V AC synchronous motor housed in an integrated rear module that combines the motor PCB, CNC-machined aluminum pulley, power switch, rear foot, and ventilation slots. Power transfers to the sub-platter via Rega’s Advanced EBLT belt. Changing between 33⅓ and 45 RPM still follows the classic British hairshirt tradition: you lift the platter and move the belt by hand from one pulley step to the other.

There is no built-in phono stage, no Bluetooth transmitter, and no USB jack. The captive RCA interconnect carries raw moving-magnet cartridge level with an internal ground through the left channel, so you will need an amplifier, receiver, or powered speaker pair with an MM phono input—or an outboard phono stage such as Rega’s $195 Fono Mini A2D. When the conical stylus wears out or the itch to upgrade strikes, the Carbon body accepts Rega’s new bonded-elliptical Carbon Pro replacement stylus.
