Topping Mini 500 Packs 220W Stereo and 450W Mono Class D Power Into a $229 Desktop Chassis
Desktop Class D amplifiers under $250 used to force a choice between low noise and real voltage swing. Guangzhou-based Topping has spent the last few years chipping away at that compromise—first with the balanced PA5 II, then with its discrete B100 and B200 monoblocks, and most recently with the budget Mini 300. Announced this week at $229 through Topping and U.S. distributor Apos Audio, the new Mini 500 steps up to a 53V external power supply and adds switchable Stereo/Mono and Volume/Bypass modes inside a 2.4-pound machined aluminum enclosure.
53V Rails, Native BTL Stereo, and 2-Ohm Mono Operation
Measuring 7.48 × 6.46 × 1.73 inches (190 × 164 × 44 mm), the Mini 500 uses a fully balanced differential signal path feeding a native Bridge-Tied Load (BTL) Class D output stage. Fueled by its 53V DC power brick, the amplifier swings up to 92 Vpp into 8 ohms and 85 Vpp into 4 ohms. In stereo mode at a clean 1% THD+N ceiling, continuous power is rated at 220 watts per channel into 4 ohms and 120 watts per channel into 8 ohms (reaching 250W × 2 into 4 ohms and 150W × 2 into 8 ohms at 10% THD+N).

Flipping the rear channel-mode switch to Mono parallels the output stages (PBTL) so the amplifier is stable down to 2-ohm loads. According to the Topping Mini 500 user manual, a single unit in Mono mode delivers 450 watts continuous into 2 ohms (500W at 10% THD+N), 240 watts into 4 ohms (300W peak), and 120 watts into 8 ohms. At a 5-watt listening level into 4 ohms via the balanced inputs, A-weighted THD+N sits below 0.0005% with a 126 dB signal-to-noise ratio and a noise floor under 17 µVrms.
Volume Potentiometer or Pure Power Amp Bypass

One practical gripe with budget mini-amps when you later upgrade to a dedicated preamp or balanced DAC—or when you buy a second amp to run dual monoblocks—is trying to match two front-panel volume knobs by eye. Topping solved that with a rear slide switch labeled VOL and BYPASS. In VOL mode, the front-panel knob controls playback level like a compact two-input integrated amplifier. Switching to BYPASS takes the volume potentiometer out of the circuit completely, locking the Mini 500 into fixed-gain pure power amp operation (19.8 dB gain on the balanced XLR/6.35 mm TRS combo jacks, 25.7 dB on the single-ended RCA inputs).
Passive cooling is handled by dense heatsink fins machined into the rear and bottom plates of the aluminum chassis, joined by a 3.5 mm 12V trigger input that syncs with the front-panel TRIG / ON / OFF toggle switch.
