Naim Mu-so Utopia ($6,500) and Focal Mu-so Hekla ($3,600) Put 15 Drivers and Dolby Atmos Into One Meter of Aluminum

Since French loudspeaker manufacturer Focal (founded in Saint-Étienne in 1979) and British electronics specialist Naim Audio (founded in Salisbury in 1973) merged in 2011, the two companies have mostly kept their flagship naming conventions on their own sides of the English Channel. With the October 15, 2026 announcement of the $6,500 Naim Mu-so Utopia joining the already available $3,600 Focal Mu-so Hekla (press release PDF), the two brands now share a one-meter-wide, 15-driver, 7.1.2-channel Dolby Atmos wireless platform at two distinct engineering tiers.

Fifteen Drivers in a 39.4-Inch Chassis

Both the Focal Mu-so Hekla and Naim Mu-so Utopia share the exact same exterior dimensions—39.37 × 11.61 × 4.65 inches (100 × 29.5 × 11.8 cm)—and the same 15-transducer physical layout: three 6 × 3-inch racetrack woofers, two 2.75-inch front midrange drivers, two 1-inch front tweeters, four 1.5 × 2.75-inch side-firing full-range drivers, and four 1.5 × 2.75-inch top-mounted full-range drivers. Each driver gets its own discrete amplifier channel.

In the $3,600 Focal Mu-so Hekla—already shipping—the 15 drivers are powered by 15 Class D amplifiers totaling 660 watts (3 × 60 W for the woofers and 12 × 40 W for the remaining channels). According to the Focal Mu-so Hekla datasheet, low-frequency extension reaches 30 Hz (±3 dB) with a -6 dB point at 27 Hz and a maximum output of 108 dB SPL at 1 meter.

What Changes in the $6,500 Naim Mu-so Utopia

Scheduled to ship in January 2027 at $6,500, the Naim Mu-so Utopia is the first Naim product to wear Focal’s Utopia badge. The Utopia upgrades the front stereo array with French-made ‘M’-profile ‘W’-cone composite sandwich midrange drivers—drawing on Focal’s W-cone sandwich technology—paired with new-generation Focal PRISM tweeters, with signature red Utopia trim on the cabinet.

Naim’s Salisbury engineers also reworked the amplifier topology into a 720-watt hybrid layout. As detailed in the Naim Mu-so Utopia specification sheet, the three racetrack woofers receive 3 × 84 W of Class D power and the ten midrange, side, and height channels receive 10 × 42 W of Class D power, while the two PRISM tweeters are driven by dedicated 2 × 24 W Class AB amplifiers. The rated response is 30 Hz–20 kHz (±3 dB), with a 25 Hz (-6 dB) bass limit; peak output rises to 109 dB SPL.

Both systems run on the Naim Pulse Platform (NPP). According to the manufacturers’ product documentation, onboard processing includes Sphere Mode (beamforming and inter-channel crosstalk cancellation for wide two-channel stereo imaging) and Focal’s ADAPT room tuning via the Focal & Naim mobile app, using distances the listener enters for the system, walls, ceiling and seating position. Rear connections include HDMI eARC, Optical TOSLINK, Gigabit Ethernet, an RCA subwoofer output, and Wi-Fi 6 (with the antenna concealed inside the rear extruded aluminum heatsink), supporting Apple AirPlay 2, Google Cast, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz Connect, Spotify Connect, and high-res UPnP streaming up to 32-bit/384 kHz WAV, 24-bit/384 kHz FLAC/AIFF/ALAC, and DSD128.
